“Through the Tunnel” Prove Yourself Paragraph

A time when I had to prove myself is when I was in eighth grade and I had a 0.0. I was really scared I wasn’t going to graduate with my class. I was scared and didn’t know what to do. I felt like all my staff and family members had given up on me and didn’t care. I thought I was going to be like most of my family and drop out of high school. I had a month before graduation day. I got all my missing work turned in. I began to focus and on graduation day I passed with a 3.8. I was proud of myself even if no one else was.

Symbolism and Allegory Unit Reflection

For the last few days in Ms. Priester’s English class we have been learning about Allegory and symbolism. One way I've learned about symbolism is reading the story "The Skull and the Arrow".  Another way is by working with a partner in class helping me study and go over it. My favorite assignment of allegory and symbolism would be reading "The Skull and the Arrow". The story grabbed my attention when I first read it. It had a great meaning to it. Symbolism and allegory have changed my thinking a lot. I never knew what they meant but now that I do I will understand a lot more things.

"The Grandfather" My Tree Trunk Paragraph

Like the narrator in "The Grandfather" by Gary Soto I consider Maria to be my family. She's like my sister. Maria’s family to me because she makes me feel comfortable and safe when I’m around her. Maria gives me strength when I’m feeling down or whenever I have a problem. Maria always tells me to me to believe in my self and to follow my dreams. I depend on Maria when I’m sad. I expect her to be there. A tree symbolizes family because each branch represents a family member and each leaf represent a child.  Branch may break off but with the right amount of water and sunshine it will grow back!

“The Grandfather” Three Meanings of the Tree Paragraph

The symbolic item in “The Grandfather” By Gary Soto is the avocado tree.
The avocado tree represents the grandfather’s family. The narrator represents the tree as the grandfather. The grandfather worked hard and took care of his family. Each branch represents a family member. Each avocado that grew represented a new member to the family. ‘‘It grew, as did my family”. Families are like trees in many different ways. The all stick together and grow as a family. The storm may always try to knock the tree down but in the end it will continue to stand. A branch may fall off but a new one will always grow back.
